CAIBIDEAL A SEACHT.

SEACHAIN AN MHUINÍN BHAOTH AGUS AN T-UABHAR.

1. Is baoth an té a chuireann a mhuinín as daoine, ná as aon rud cruthaithe.

Ná bíodh ceann-fé ort i dtaobh seirbhíse ’ dhéanamh don fhear thall, trí ghrá d’Íosa Críost, ná i dtaobh bheith it dhuine bhocht i radharc an tsaeil seo.

Ná bíodh do sheasamh ort féin, ach bíodh do mhuinín go seasmhach a’ Dia.

Dein do dhícheall féin agus cabhróidh Dia leat.

Ná bíodh do mhuinín as t’eólas féin ná a’ gastacht aon duine beó, ach amháin a’ grásta Dé; mar is é Dia do chabhraíonn le lucht na húmhlaíochta agus do leagann ar lár lucht an uabhair.

2. Ná dein maíomh a’ saibhreas má tá saibhreas agat; ná as do cháirdibh má táid siad cómhachtach; ach bíodh do mhaíomh as Dia, ós É a thugann dúinn gach aon rud, agus gur mian leis É féin a thabhairt dúinn thar gach aon rud.

Ná bí maíteach má fear mór thu, nú fear breá, agus go bhféadfadh taom breóiteachta an mhéid agus an bhreáthacht do lot.

Ná glac sásamh mar gheall ar t’éirim aigne, ná ar do ghéarchúis, le heagla go gcurfá míshásamh ar Dhia, agus gurb é Dia a thug duit pé dea-thréithe atá ionat.

3. Ná meas gur feárr thu ná daoine eile, le heagla go mb’fhéidir go bhfeicfeadh Dia gur measa thu ná iad; mar chíonn Dia cad ’tá istigh sa duine.

Ná glac mór-is-fiú mar gheall ar do dhea-oibreachaibh, óir ní mar a bhreithníd daoine a bhreithníonn Dia, agus an rud a thaithneann le daoine is minic ná taithneann sé le Dia.

Má tá aon ní fónta ionat, creid go bhfuil ní is feárr ná é i ndaoinibh eile, i dtreó go gcimeádfair thu féin úmhal.

Má mheasann tú gur feárr gach éinne ná thu féin, ní dhéanfaidh sé blúire díobhála dhuit; ach má mheasann tú gur feárr tu féin ná oiread agus éinne amháin, déanfaidh san díobháil mhór duit.

Bíonn suaimhneas i gcónaí ag an té atá úmhal, ach sa chroí ’na bhfuil an t-uabhar ní bhíonn ach formad agus fearg go minic.

Foclóirín

breóiteacht: “sickness”.
ceann-fé: “shame”, or ceann faoi in GCh. The hyphen in the original is preserved here, as this is a noun.
cómhachtach: “powerful”, or cumhachtach in GCh. Pronounced /koːxtəx/.
dea-obair: “good work, good deed”. Cnósach Focal ó Bhaile Bhúirne shows that the best speakers, such as Amhlaoibh Ó Loingsigh did not intrude an h after the prefix before the vowel (see dea-eólas in CFBB), although some speakers did.
dea-thréith: “good quality”.
formad: “envy”, pronounced /forəməd/.
gastacht: “cleverness, cunning”.
gurb: the combination of the subordinating conjunction go and the copula, pronounced /gərb, gurəb/.
i: “in”.I becomes ins before the article (in sna), and before gach in WM Irish. Id is often found as it in PUL’s works, even before a consonant, and it seems that this is particularly the case when followed by ch and dh/gh. Theoretically, an unvoiced consonant like ch could devoice the d, but dh/gh is not unvoiced, and so it seems that voiced guttural consonants have the same effect.
loitim, lot: “to spoil”. The LS version of Aithris shows that lot is pronounced /lotʹ/, and it may be that this verb parallels cuirim, cur, where cur is generally pronounced cuir.
maíteach: “boastful”.
méid: “amount, size”. This is normally masculine in PUL’s Irish, but we find an mhéid here in chapter 7 of book 1 and PSD shows that the feminine gender is possible.
muinín: “confidence, trust”.
sásamh: “satisfaction”. Sásamh a ghlacadh (mar gheall ar rud), “to take satisfaction in something”.
seasaím, seasamh: “to stand”, or seasaim, seasamh in GCh. Do bhreithiúntas a sheasamh, “to stand by/insist on your own view”. Seasamh ort féin, “to rely on yourself”.
taom: “fit, paroxysm”. Taom breóiteachta, “a short period of illness”.
té: “he (who); the one (who)”. This word derives from é with t prefixed, as is normal before a masculine noun in the nominative. However, the form is calcified, and the genitive and dative are also an té, as is seen here in chapter 7 of book 1, ag an té.
