Catilína 25

XXV.

Ach bhí ar na mnáibh sin bean dárbh ainm Semprónia, bean a bhí tar éis mórán gníomh a dhéanamh go minic ’na raibh dánacht fir iontu. Bhí a cion den ádh ar an mnaoi sin ó dhúchas, ó dheallramh, óna fear, óna claínn. Bhí tabhairt suas uirthi i léann Laidne agus Gréigise. Bhí sí oilte ar cheól agus ar rínce ní b’uaibhrí ná mar ba ghá do mhnaoi fhónta, agus ar a lán nithe eile ná fuil iontu ach cabhrú le só. Ba mhó a dúil in aon ní eile ná i ndea-chlú agus i mbanúlacht. Níorbh fhuiriste dhuit a dhéanamh amach ceoca ar a cuid airgid nú ar a clú ba lú a beann. Bhí sí go minic roimis sin cionntach i mbriseadh geallúna, i séanadh iasachta fé dhearbhú, in eólas ar mharú duine. D’imigh sí fiain, le rabairne, chun dealúis. Ach ní raibh éirim a haigne go holc in aon chor. Dheineadh sí filíocht. Bhí sí deisbhéalach. D’fhéadfadh sí labhairt go banúil, nú go bog, nú go mínáireach. Bhí sí lán de shult agus lán de ghreannmhaireacht.

Foclóirín

ceoca: “which? which of them? whether (of two options)” From cé acu or cé’cu. Pronounced /kʹukə/.
deallramh: “appearance”, dealramh. Pronounced /dʹaurəv/.
greannmhaireacht: “amiability”.
Laidean: “Latin (language)”, or Laidin in the CO, where the historic dative has replaced the nominative. It is worth noting that the genitive, given here as Laidne (Laidine in the CO) is pronounced /laŋ′i/ according to the Leitiriú Shímplí edition, which is the reason why the genitive is better written without an i between the d and the n.
Semprónia: Sempronia, a beautiful woman who supported the Catilina conspiracy. Wife of a former consul, Decimus Junius Brutus.
só: “comfort, ease, satisfaction, enjoyment”.
uaibhreach: “proud, haughty”, but also “excellent, pleasant, gay” referring to a woman’s dance.
