Catilína 24

XXIV.

Do thánathas chun na gcruinnithe agus do deineadh an toghadh, agus do gairmeadh ’na gConsalaibh M. Tullius agus C. Antónius. Bhain san an chéad chroitheadh a lucht na ceilge. Níor laíodaíodh buile Chatilína, áfach. Is amhlaidh a dh’oibrigh sé é féin níba dhéine; ag cruinniú arm ins gach áit chaothúil ar fuaid na hIodáile; ag fáil airgid ar iasacht ar a chreidiúint féin nú ar chreidiúint carad agus á chur go Faesula, ag triall ar fhear dárbh ainm Manlius, an fear a thosnaigh an cogadh ’na dhiaidh san. Deirtear gur ghlac sé chuige an uair sin sluaite de gach aicme daoine, agus roinnt ban, leis, mná a bhí tar éis éacht fiach do chur suas nuair a chuir an t-aos deireadh leis an airgead dóibh, gan deireadh ’ chur lena ndrochmhiantaibh fós. Bhí súil ag Catilína go dtiocfadh leis, trí chúnamh na mban san, daoraicme na cathrach do mhealladh chuige, an chathair do loscadh, agus a bhfearaibh siúd do ghlacadh chuige nú do mharú.

Foclóirín

ar fuaid: “throughout”, /erʹ fuədʹ/, ar fud in the CO. PUL wrote in his Notes on Irish Words and Usages (p54) that ar fuaid should be used for broad areas (ar fuaid na paróiste) and ar fuid for small areas (ar fuid an tí).
caothúil: “convenient, suitably situated”, or caoithiúil in the CO, pronounced /ke:’hu:lʹ/.
cruinniú: “gathering, assembly”. The plural, cruinnithe, probably refers here to the legislative assemblies of ancient Rome, chiefly the Curiate Assembly, but also the Century Assembly and the Tribal Assembly.
Faesula: the modern Fiesole, near Florence, where Catiline began his rebellion.
Iodáil, an Iodáil: Italy, pronounced /i’dɑ:lʹ/.
Manlius: Caius Manlius, an accomplice of Catilina, charged with commanding troops that Catilina raised in his conspiracy.
